SEND Unit

Our SEND Unit provide specialist, nurturing pathways within Honeywell Primary, enabling children with speech, language and communication needs to develop confidence, independence and a strong sense of belonging.

At Honeywell’s SEND Unit for children aged 4- 11, we deliver high-quality, personalised support that develops communication, independence and confidence.

Through our Sunflowers (EY/KS1) and Cornflowers (KS2) units, we:

  • integrate specialist teaching with meaningful mainstream experiences
  • build strong communication foundations
  • support children to successfully transition within and beyond primary education
  • work in close partnership with families, professionals and the Trust

This reflects the Mercian Educational Trust commitment to inclusion, ambition and excellence for all.

Our Approach

At Honeywell, communication is the golden thread that runs through everything we do. Our curriculum is built around children's developmental needs, ensuring that learning is meaningful, engaging and personalised rather than simply following a traditional curriculum model.

Through story-based learning, vocabulary development, sensory exploration, continuous provision and real-life experiences, we help children develop confidence, communication skills and independence. Assessment focuses on individual progress and is informed by EHCP outcomes, Development Matters, AET frameworks, SCERTS approaches and Evidence for Learning.

We believe children learn best when communication is embedded throughout the day—from arrival routines and play experiences to community visits and personal development activities. This integrated approach enables children to develop the skills they need to communicate, participate and succeed in school and everyday life.

The positive progress seen in children's engagement, confidence and communication reflects the dedication of our staff team, who are committed to providing a nurturing, aspirational and inclusive learning environment for every child.

How are children placed into the SEND Unit?

Places within our SEND Unit provisions are allocated through a separate admissions process through Worcestershire Local Authority and are only for children with EHCPs in place that fit the designations of our provisions. Children are not able to move from our mainstream classes into our resource base classes unless this is through the Worcestershire admissions process.
